Privacy and Cookie Notice
This notice explains what information may be processed when you use cmna.jameshoward.us, why it is processed, and what choices you have.
This is a personal and professional website operated by James P. Howard, II. It is the web companion to Computational Methods for Numerical Analysis with R. Questions about this notice or the handling of information associated with this website may be sent to me through a contact method published onjameshoward.us.
Information processed automatically
Like most websites, CMNA and its hosting infrastructure may process limited technical information when a page or resource is requested. This may include your Internet Protocol address, the date and time of the request, the page or resource requested, a referring page supplied by your browser, browser and device information, and information needed to operate or protect the site.
The website is hosted through GitHub Pages. Ordinary hosting, delivery, security, and diagnostic logs may therefore be processed by GitHub under its own terms and privacy practices.
R code and browser laboratories
The CMNA laboratories use webR to execute R through WebAssembly in your browser. The R code you type into a CMNA laboratory or the R Workbench is not sent to a CMNA computation server for execution.
Some laboratory resources are loaded from third-party infrastructure. webR is loaded from the webR project distribution service, and the optional source drawer retrieves canonical CMNA package source from GitHub only when you ask to view it. Those providers may receive ordinary request information such as your IP address and browser information when your browser requests their resources.
Shareable laboratory states are encoded into the URL fragment after the#. The site does not store those experiment states in a CMNA database. A URL fragment is normally handled by the browser and is not sent to the web server as part of an HTTP request. If you copy and share such a URL, however, anyone who receives it can see the experiment state encoded in the link.
Cookies
CMNA uses one necessary cookie to remember your privacy choice and, only with your consent, optional Google Analytics cookies.
Consent cookie
The website stores a cookie named cookieConsent after you accept or reject analytics cookies. The cookie records your decision and the version of the cookie notice under which it was made.
The consent cookie is used only to remember the choice you requested. It is normally retained for 365 days and may be replaced sooner if you change your choice or if this notice changes materially.
Cookie Settings
Google Analytics is optional. It will not load, contact Google, or set analytics cookies unless you affirmatively select Accept analytics. You may select Reject analytics without losing access to any part of CMNA, including the R laboratories.
You may review or change your choice at any time by selectingCookie Settings in the footer. If you withdraw consent, CMNA disables future Analytics collection and attempts to remove the Google Analytics cookies associated with this website from your browser.
If your browser sends a recognized Global Privacy Control signal, CMNA treats that signal as a rejection of optional analytics.
Google Analytics
Only with your consent, CMNA uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors find and use the site. This includes ordinary page measurement and selected interactions with the teaching laboratories, such as running a method, playing an iteration, exporting R, opening an experiment in the Workbench, viewing canonical source, or opening a prediction worksheet.
The purpose is to understand which parts of the book companion are useful and which teaching paths people actually use. CMNA does not use Google Analytics for targeted advertising.
| Cookie | Purpose | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|
_ga | Distinguishes one browser from another for statistical measurement | Up to two years |
_ga_* | Maintains session information for a particular Analytics property | Up to two years |
Analytics is configured with advertising storage, advertising user data, advertising personalization, Google Signals, and advertising-personalization signals disabled. User-level and event-level Analytics data are retained in Google Analytics for no longer than 14 months.
Google may process Analytics information on servers outside your country. Additional information is available inGoogle's Privacy Policy and its explanation ofhow Google uses information from sites and applications that use its services.
External websites and services
CMNA links to websites and services operated by others, including GitHub, CRAN, publishers, retailers, webR documentation, and jameshoward.us. Following a link allows the destination service to receive information from your browser under its own terms and privacy practices.
Disclosure and sale of information
I do not sell personal information, use it for targeted advertising, or knowingly share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Information may nevertheless be processed by service providers that support hosting, security, resource delivery, or measurement of the website.
Security and retention
Information is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was processed, subject to the practices of the relevant infrastructure providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live and which laws apply, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, withdrawal of consent, data portability, or review by an appropriate privacy or data-protection authority. These rights may be subject to legal limitations or exceptions.
Children's privacy
CMNA is intended for a general educational and professional audience and is not directed to children. I do not knowingly use this website to solicit or collect personal information from children.
Changes to this notice
This notice may be updated when the website, its services, or applicable requirements change. If a change materially affects the basis on which analytics consent was obtained, CMNA will invalidate the previous consent version and request a new choice.
